If you are looking for a classic, zippy, off-dry style and want representation outside of Mosel, then this is the wine to have. In broad strokes, the Rheinhessen produces wines with more nervy, mineral tension as compared to the Mosel's fruitier, juicier styles. Gunderloch is a thriving estate of approximately twenty-five hectares of vines in some of the top vineyards of the "Roter Hang" ("red slope") area in the Rheinhessen appellation.
If you crack open a book on German wine history, you're going to see the name Gunderloch. When you hit the Rheinhessen, Gunderloch dominates the history of the region with very best vineyard sites—Hipping, Pettenthal, Rothenberg—and the winemaking has always been second-to-none.
While most Riesling at this price point is usually made up of sourced fruit and lacking in character, the Jean-Baptiste is coming from only these three incredible sites and is a standout in each and every vintage.
Elegant and simply lovely
Aromas: Peaches, white flowers, pineapple & citrus
Mouthfeel: Playful and complex
Tasting Notes: This wine starts out fruity and intense on the palate, then finishes seemingly drier than usual. Very pleasing with great tension and better "snap" than you'd expect in 2019, this is exciting to drink!
Pairings: Lemongrass pork, Vietnamese crepes, sushi, spicy dishes
